Interactive Access to Indexing Initiative Tools

The Interactive facility provides access to some of the Natural Language Processing tools being developed in the Applied Clinical Informatics Branch of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, an Intramural Research Division of the National Library of Medicine.

Our apologies - we have had to take down the open access to some of our tools due to abusive users. Interactive MTI is now only accessible with a valid UTS account. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and hope to make this tool openly available again soon.

If you have been extensively using Interactive MTI -- please contact us and we can provide an easier way of processing large sets of data that will not overrun our servers.

Interactive access facilitates quick tests of small amounts of your data with our tools. The results may lead you to the set of options that will produce the desired output for your needs so that you can apply those options to larger sets of data using our batch facility.

The various submission forms allow you to type or "cut-and-paste" a small amount of text to be processed. You are also allowed to select options relevant to the individual tools. Interactive requests are executed immediately providing the quickest possible turn-around of your results. Upon submission of a request, you will be shown the original input text followed by the results as soon as they are computed.

The Interactive mode is only intended for the testing of the various programs and their options. The input text MUST contain only a single block of text to be processed and the input text MUST NOT exceed 10,000 characters in length. There is a program that verifies these limits and your request will be denied if either limit is exceeded.

To use most of our tools in Interactive mode, you must have activated a UMLS Terminology Services (UTS) account. MeSH on Demand is the only tool that does not have this requirement. For more information please visit our Help about UTS accounts Web page. This account is free with only the minor requirement of filing a brief annual report on your use of the UMLS.

Users are also responsible for compliance with the UMLS Metathesaurus License Agreement which requires you to respect the copyrights of the constituent vocabularies.

Please Note: You must have a UTS Account to run any of the following Indexing Initiative tools in Interactive Mode. Please see the What are the requirements to use the Interactive facility? question for more details and requirements.

The following Indexing Initiative tools are open for Interactive use without requiring you to have a UTS Account:

  • MeSH on Demand: A tool for identifying MeSH Terms relevant to your text. MeSH on Demand is a simplified version of MTI providing a simpler interface and output. Please Note:This link will take you away from the Indexing Initiative web site to the MeSH hosted web site for MeSH on Demand.
